Spirit Houses from Thailand: These gold colored Thai Spirit Houses are back in stock (we sold out of our last shipment very quickly). Each spirit house measures 13 X 10 X 5 Inches. These beautiful Thai Spirit Houses are made in Chiang Mai province, northern Thailand. These particular spirit houses have been given an aged gold appearance, which really gives them an antique appearance (even though they are new). Please note that each one is handmade, so some of the mirrors might be different colors (for example, some may have green mirrors, some might have blue, some clear). This means that no two will look exactly alike and you will have a one-of-a-kind item.

Thai people have been using spirit houses for thousands of years, and they are the second most common religious item after Buddha Statues that Thai people will keep in their homes. However, their use actually predates the spread of Theravada Buddhism to Thailand. It is believed that each dwelling or business will have spirits that inhabit it, and the best way to appease those spirits is to provide them with their own beautiful home to live in. This will help keep the spirits from being mischievous.

Belief in spirits in Thailand is so strong that every home or business establishment will have one. They are often decorated with figures of married couples, furniture or even small figures of elephants (a symbol of good fortune and prosperity). On the verandah outside the house, offerings of flower garlands, candles and incense are usually made.

Many Thai people believe that offerings should be made to the spirits residing in the spirit houses whenever a new business venture or change in life (such as an engagement or marriage) is undertaken. This offering helps to ask for the blessings of the spirits.

But spirit houses are not only found in homes. There are often found at numerous caves and bodies of water, such as local lakes that play an important role in the life of local villages. They may be placed at the foot of trees considered sacred, and might be placed at the sight of accidents to appease the spirits of those who lost their lives during the misfortune.

The spirit houses that we carry are in the shape of a traditional Thai temple building, namely the Viharn (main chapel). The edges of the roof are lined with a sacred flame design (known as Chaw Fah in the Thai language), and the wood carvings that protrude toward the front and the back of the spirit house at the apex of the two roofs are images of Nagas (mythical serpents, or snakes), which traditionally protect the teachings of the Buddha.
