The Apsaras: Alluring Nature Spirits

By on April 30, 2012

The Apsaras are female spirits of nature. They are usually water nymphs or forest spirits. Apsaras are considered very talented artistically, and all of them are described as being very beautiful, and there are numerous tales of them seducing those who are not spiritually devoted.

Apsaras love to dance and they often performed for gods. While serving as inspiration for lovers, they were often sent by Ravana (a villain of the Ramayana) to tempt religious sages (rishis) or priest caste members (Brahmans) who were retreating into the forest on spiritual quests.
