Dhammakaya Dhutanga Buddhist Monk Pilgrimage from www.dmc.tv

Hi there, Everyone:

I mentioned in another post that sometimes compassion is conveyed in small acts. Sometimes it is also conveyed in large endeavors.

A little late, but I wanted to let you all know about the Great Dharma Pilgrimage that took place in my home country of Thailand this January.

The Dhammachai Dhutanga (Dharma Pilgrimage) took place from January 2nd through January 25th and featured over 1,000 Buddhist monks walking on foot through 6 Thai provincens (a province in Thailand is about equal to a state in the USA), and covered an area of about 225 miles. Big Compassion Comes In Small packages

Compassion: One of the fundamental principles of Buddhism

Sometimes we get overwhelmed when we start to think about performing compassionate acts. We think that we have to volunteer overseas for 6 months or a year. Or we fantasize about setting up community centers. Problem is, these tasks can be so complex, we stop ourselves from doing them before we get started.

On the other hand, sometimes the simplest acts can be the most compassionate. Read the rest of this entry »

Gandhi’s Influence On Martin Luther King’s Philosophy

January 19th, 2012

I hope everyone is having a wonderful week and a great day.

Monday was Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and I have been surprised to learn that Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence was a big influence on that of Dr. King. But maybe I shouldn’t have been surprised, because so much of their struggles seem to have been similar. Read the rest of this entry »

How Managing Expectations Can Help Lead To Happiness

January 11th, 2012

Hi there, Everyone:

I heard an interesting interview this morning on KQED Public Radio (NPR) with Chip Conley, who is a hotel founder and is the author of the book “Emotional Equations.”  It is quite a good interview and I hope that if you get the chance you will listen to a podcast of the interview.

His basic premise is that one should avoid having expectations for things that are out of control of one’s life; instead, focus your expectations on things you CAN control. Read the rest of this entry »

What Did 9/11 Have To Do With Buddhism?

September 12th, 2011

Hello everyone and Sawasdee Kha;

“Human nature will be such that horror such as 9/11 will never end.  We Buddhists can only try to pass the positive message of peace and compassion; and to remind others the futility of harboring hatred and taking revenge.”

I wish I had written the above myself, but I didn’t. Instead, this very astute observation comes from a survey taker on our 9/11 And Buddhism Survey, which we are in the middle of conducting.

Numerous people have already taken the survey, which attempts to measure what impact the 9/11 Terror Attacks (and subsequent wars) had on Westerners developing an interest in Buddhism. Read the rest of this entry »

Mahatma Gandhi Quotes: Destiny

Mahatma Gandhi Quotes: Destiny

“Carefully watch your Thoughts, for they become your Words. Manage and watch your Words, for they will become your Actions. Consider and judge your Actions, for they become your Habits. Acknowledge and watch your Habits, for they become your Values. Understand and embrace your Values, for they become your Destiny.”

~ Mahatma Gandhi

Thank You, Amma!!!

What a great time seeing Amma!!!

My mother and I were at the Ashram in San Ramon for the whole day on Monday, and it was a blessing to be in her presence.  Amma gave blessings and hugs, of course, at the end of the day.

It was also great to see our many friends there at the Ashram too.  So many people came up to us to say “hi” and ask how we were doing.

If you would like to see Amma (and we highly encourage you to do so), you can see her tour schedule in North America by clicking this link:

http://www.amma.org/tours/amma-tours/n_america.html

If you don’t get a chance to see her this time around, she should be back in North America in the fall.

Take Care Everyone!!!

UPDATE – June 16th, 2010:

I just wanted to let everyone know that I am still “feeling the effects” of seeing Amma last week. I have noticed that I have been a little calmer this week (always a blessing when you have a four-year-old son), and it has been easier to smile and forget the bad things in life.

If you get a chance to see her, we would love to hear how your experience went. Please leave a comment.
